Acute Medicine Specialty

Hi, my name is Dr Ans Malek. I am an IMG from Libya, and I have started my first NHS job in the UK last August as an Emergency Medicine doctor in Aberystwyth, Wales. After about one year I chose to rotate into the acute medicine specialty for more experience. In today’s blog, I am going to tell you about my experience in the Acute Medicine job which I hope will help you know further about this great specialty. I will discuss in this blog the following:

  1. What is the acute Medicine Specialty?

  2. Specifics of Acute Medicine specialty

  3. Benefits of Acute Medicine

What is Acute Medicine?

Acute Medicine is a specialty within internal medicine that focuses on the immediate and early treatment of patients with a variety of medical conditions who present as emergencies. The specialty is concerned with the initial assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute medical conditions, often within the first 48-72 hours of a patient's admission to the hospital.

I started my jobs a clinical fellow in Acute medicine last October, in this department you will see every medical case which gets to the hospital either referred from the GP or from the emergency medicine team. Your job is to receive the case, take history, examination and send the related investigations as well as set the treatment, if the patient needs a further assessment or an admission ,you will be the responsible doctor for it.I found Acute Medicine is a very useful specialty for my experience as I get to know a variety of acute conditions and how to deal with them as well as how to discuss with other medical specialties staff.

Specifics of Acute Medicine specialty:

Rapid Assessment and Diagnosis:

  • Physicians in acute medicine are skilled in quickly assessing and diagnosing a wide range of acute medical conditions.

  • Common conditions include heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, respiratory problems, and acute exacerbations of chronic diseases.

Management of Acute Conditions:

  • Treatment involves stabilizing patients, initiating appropriate therapies, and managing acute episodes.

  • This can include emergency interventions, administering medications, and coordinating care with other specialties.

Multidisciplinary Approach:

  • Acute medicine physicians work closely with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, specialists, and allied health professionals, to provide comprehensive care.

  • They also coordinate with emergency departments, intensive care units, and general wards.

Benefits of Acute Medicine:

Improved Patient Outcomes: Rapid and effective management of acute conditions can significantly improve patient outcomes and reduce complications.

Efficient Use of Resources: By managing acute conditions effectively, the specialty helps in optimizing the use of hospital resources and reducing unnecessary admissions.

Enhanced Patient Experience: Quick and appropriate treatment enhances patient satisfaction and reduces anxiety associated with acute medical emergencies.
