Lessons Learned During GMC Registration

Hi, my name is Maimuna. I am an IMG from India who recently received my GMC registration. In today’s blog, I will share my lessons learned while applying for the GMC registration, which I hope will help make your application successful.

I will discuss in this blog the following:

  • GMC application is straightforward

  • After the application

  • Gaps in Internship

  • Closure of place of work

GMC Application is straightforward

When you open your GMC account, on the left sidebar, you will see my registration. Click on it and follow the instructions and provide accurate information. It will basically ask about your qualifications, work experience in the last 5 years including medical, non-medical and any leaves you had. Click submit and you are done.

After the Application Submission

Once you apply, you will get an email on the same days asking you to submit documents that includes a passport scan copy, a degree scan copy ( if the degree does not reflect the date of passing the final exam, then they ask to submit a letter from university indicating the date. In my case, that was my provisional certificate); certificate of good standing which is valid for 3 months only from the date of issue; Internship certificate or the GMC form signed and stamped by the supervisor and the hospital. any gaps reason and that permission was granted must be demonstrated by a letter from the medical college.

Gaps In Internship

I had gaps in my internship, which extended my internship to one and a half years for personal reasons. The GMC asked the reason for the prolongation of the internship. I gave them the reasons that were getting married and childbirth, for which I had permission from the medical school. GMC asked me to submit a letter from the medical college confirming that the leave was granted. I got the letter.

Closure of place of work

One of the documents required are employer's reference for all medical work done without registration or non-medical work; my place of work closed down due to merging or takeover. GMC still needed either a letter from the merger or the submission of an affidavit witnessed by a GMC registered doctor who can reside anywhere. I was able to get a letter from the merger.
